Update, June 24 2016 We have confirmed that Comodo submitted Requests for Express Abandonment for all three trademark registration applications in question. We’re happy to see this positive step towards resolution, and will continue to monitor the requests as they make their way through the system. We’d like to thank our community for their support. Some months ago, it came to our attention that C

Let’s Encrypt had a great year in 2017. We more than doubled the number of active (unexpired) certificates we service to 46 million, we just about tripled the number of unique domains we service to 61 million, and we did it all while maintaining a stellar security and compliance track record. Most importantly though, the Web went from 46% encrypted page loads to 67% according to statistics from Mo

We’re excited that Facebook is supporting our work through a three-year Platinum sponsorship! We asked them to share their thoughts on HTTPS adoption here. Please join us in thanking Facebook for their support of Let’s Encrypt and our mission to encrypt the Web! - Josh Aas, Executive Director, ISRG / Let’s Encrypt If the web is more secure, everybody wins. Today we’d like to explain what it costs to run Let’s Encrypt. We’re doing this because we strive to be a transparent organization, we want people to have some context for their contributions to the project, and because it’s interesting. Let’s Encrypt will require about $2.9M USD to operate in 2017. We believe this is an incredible value for a secure and reliable service that is capable of issuing

Update, September 17, 2020 Due to concerns about insufficient ISRG root propagation on Android devices we have decided to move the date on which we will start serving a chain to our own root to January 11, 2021. We had originally delayed this change until September 29, 2020. Update, June 11, 2020 In an effort to provide more time for our community to prepare for this transition, we have moved back

The Let’s Encrypt team is excited to announce that ACME Renewal Information (ARI) is live in production! ARI makes it possible for our subscribers to handle certificate revocation and renewal as easily and automatically as the process of getting a certificate in the first place. With ARI, Let’s Encrypt can signal to ACME clients when they should renew certificates. In the normal case of a certific

At Let’s Encrypt we’re always looking for ways to improve the security and integrity of the Web PKI. We’re proud to launch multi-perspective domain validation today because we believe it’s an important step forward for the domain validation process. To our knowledge we are the first CA to deploy multi-perspective validation at scale. Domain validation is a process that all CAs use to ensure that a

This letter was originally published in our 2023 Annual Report. We typically open our annual report with a letter from our Executive Director and co-founder, Josh Aas, but he’s on parental leave so I’ll be filling in. I’ve run the Brand & Donor Development team at ISRG since 2016, so I’ve had the pleasure of watching our work mature, our impact grow, and I’ve had the opportunity to get to know man

We are excited to announce a new extension to Let’s Encrypt’s implementation of the ACME protocol that we are calling “profile selection.” This new feature will allow site operators and ACME clients to opt in to the next evolution of Let’s Encrypt. As of today, the staging environment is advertising a new field in its directory resource: GET /directory HTTP/1.1 HTTP/1.1 200 OK Content-Type: applic

This letter was originally published in our 2020 annual report. ISRG’s first project, Let’s Encrypt, has been wildly successful. We’re now helping to secure more than 225 million websites and the Web is making great progress towards 100% HTTPS. We’ve put in a lot of hard work and dealt with some challenges along the way, but at a high level the outlook is quite sunny. I’m incredibly proud to share

2025 marks ten years of Let’s Encrypt. Already this year we’ve taken steps to continue to deliver on our values of user privacy, efficiency, and innovation, all with the intent of continuing to deliver free TLS certificates to as many people as possible; to deliver encryption for everybody. And while we’re excited about the technical progress we’ll make this year, we’re also going to celebrate thi

Let’s Encrypt launched a Certificate Transparency (CT) log this past spring. We’re excited to share how we built it in hopes that others can learn from what we did. CT has quickly become an important piece of Internet security infrastructure, but unfortunately it’s not trivial to run a good log. The more the CT community can share about what has been done, the better the ecosystem will be. Sectigo

According to Cloudflare’s Merkle Town, 257,036 certificates are issued every hour. We at Let’s Encrypt are issuing close to 70% of those certs. Being a Certificate Authority that operates as a nonprofit for the public’s benefit means we are constantly considering how we can improve our Subscribers’ experience and security. One simple innovation to do just that is by using CAA (Certification Author

On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, Let’s Encrypt generated 10 new Intermediate CA Key Pairs, and issued 15 new Intermediate CA Certificates containing the new public keys. These new intermediate certificates provide smaller and more efficient certificate chains to Let’s Encrypt Subscribers, enhancing the overall online experience in terms of speed, security, and accessibility. Let’s Encrypt has been running a Certificate Transparency (CT) log since 2019 as part of our commitment to keeping the Web PKI ecosystem healthy. CT logs have become important infrastructure for an encrypted Web 1, but have a well-deserved reputation for being difficult to operate at high levels of trust: Only 6 organizations run logs that are currently considered to be “qualified.” 2 Our Oak log

On Thursday, September 3rd, 2020, Let’s Encrypt issued six new certificates: one root, four intermediates, and one cross-sign. These new certificates are part of our larger plan to improve privacy on the web, by making ECDSA end-entity certificates widely available, and by making certificates smaller. Given that we issue 1.5 million certificates every day, what makes these ones special? Why did we

This letter was originally published in our 2021 annual report. We can do a lot to improve security and privacy on the Internet by taking existing ideas and applying them in ways that benefit the general public at scale.
